Faith In Action

The kids joined us for another Faith In Action this morning. As usual, they worked with Lehr while I wandered around taking photos. The three of them started outside, working landscaping by pulling weeds and raking. After an hour or so, Maddux grew tired of it, so I took her and a friend to the gym to play with the other kids. Eli hung with Daddy for another 30 minutes and then he walked around with me. When we next saw Lehr, Eli re-joined him, just in time for mulching. This was a difficult task, but Eli loved it. He shoveled and shoveled the rest of the morning. Later, Eli commented that he was going to be sore the next day because his arms were so tired. I love that they have been so involved in so many FIAs!

Faith In Action

This morning we spent our time at an Elementary School near our church. Lehr was in charge of the painting team, so any work Maddux and Eli did would get them messy for sure! It was rather chilly today, so after our initial walk around the school, Maddux was already asking to go play with the kids instead of paint with Daddy. She ended up staying in the gym all morning. Eli hung out with Lehr more than half of the time, spilling paint on himself no less than twice. But he did paint some lattice and provide smiles for many others who were working, so that counts for something.

The kids have done many FIAs, but every time brings new conversations because of their increasing age and awareness. This time we talked about how these classrooms didn't have Smartboards like Eli's school, or fancy playground equipment like Maddux's school. The end result was Eli commenting how excited he thought the kids would be to walk into school on Monday morning and see the new basketball and hopscotch paint in the back area. Cool.

Faith In Action

As we've done before, we brought the kids to Faith In Action this morning with the intention of them participating. Since I'm always running around shooting pictures, that means they work with Lehr, if possible. Maddux usually has to end up in childcare at some point, due to her boredom or the 'danger factor' of the job at hand, but Eli hasn't been in childcare during an FIA in a long time....he has been helping at all of them for over a year now. This one proved to be the most enjoyable for him yet. Lehr was able to work with a friend to build some big, sturdy wooden tables for the football team...I think for water coolers. Eli got to use a drill, measure the wood, get covered in sawdust, and hang out with Daddy and some big boys all day. Maddux had a good time with her friends in the gym also; her favorite part was worship at the end, of course. Dancing around in a gym with hundreds of people watching? Right up her alley....

Today was especially great because of Eli's attitude; he has had a rough time lately, especially in heart matters concerning the family. But today found him happy, grateful, caring, and giving. Life is good! (Here is a short segment from the news that light, featuring Lehr's back :) )

FIA

The four of us served at Faith In Action for the first time today! Last time around, Eli helped Lehr a little, but Maddux was still too young. Turns out, Maddie is really still too young, but Lehr kept her with him for a little while anyway. The kids and Lehr started in the gym where they chipped gum and other things off of the bleachers before cleaning all surfaces. Then they moved on to painting, but by that point, Mad Dog was too much to handle, so Lehr checked her into a more kid-appropriate area. Eli, however, stuck with Lehr all day, even after Maddie and I left so nap time could still happen. He did great. He ran around a little with another boy from the church, but he did a lot of painting and managed to stay pretty clean!

Faith In Action

This morning Eli and Maddux hopped in the car with Daddy to attend Faith In Action. (Mommy was running.) Since Eli is old enough, he stayed with Daddy instead of getting dropped off at the church with Maddux. The boys ended up at Campbell High School, working on landscaping. Eli was SO excited to work with Lehr and Mr. Hathcock. Someone game him (Eli) a pair of small gardening shears and he went to town, weeding and pruning some bushes. From the looks of it, he actually knew what he was doing! When I got there and saw him, wearing big gloves on his hands and a 5/6 shirt of his cousin's, I did a double take. No way was that my BABY boy, working so hard. Wow.

FIA

This morning we had Faith In Action at our church. (In a nutshell, instead of going to church, we ARE the church that day, usually participating in some type of community service or outreach program.) This time around we had a bi-lingual service, handed out school supplies, provided dental check-ups, prepared lunch, and gave haircuts to students and families of a nearby elementary school. The kids had a blast and the day was a huge success.

Eli helped Treis and Lehr grill, arriving a little earlier than Grandma Cathie, Maddux and me. (By the way, when the guys all got in one car, Eli said, "DUDE FEST!!" Then I told him our car was a 'chick fest', to which he replied, "Chicken Fest??") As the day wore on, Treis defended his reputation in air hockey, Maddux ran around with Grandma Cathie chasing her, and Eli went back and forth between the two. Maddux sat still for a butterfly face painting at one point, shocking all who know her. Then Eli got a bear painted on his forehead. They didn't offer bears, but the guy overheard Eli say he wanted one, so he caved. Then Eli pointed to his forehead for the location....wacko!

After naps we made homemade veggie pizza for dinner. Once we finished eating, Eli asked for 'that thing they had at the church that Treis ate'. (Cotton Candy...obviously very taboo in our house.) I asked, "You mean cotton candy?" "YES!" Eli said. I told him we probably won't eat that any time soon because it is nothing but sugar, to which Eli replied, "But I LOOOOOVE it." I know all of you are chuckling at me now!

Before bed, Eli, Treis, Lehr and I played a game of CandyLand. Of course there were a lot of WWCD's thrown around. At one point Treis drew a good card right after Eli did. Eli told him, "You got a chicken dinner just like me!!"

Faith In Action

Today we had a 'work day' at our church. Instead of going outside of our walls to practice Faith In Action, we all pushed up our sleeves and tried to prepare the church for the many newcomers we have had walking through our doors. For me this meant taking pictures of the hard work, but I also picked up a paintbrush here and there. Lehr worked hard in the basement doing manly stuff with a hammer. And Eli and Maddux spent their morning with their friends in the childcare area. Eli was a bit disappointed about this. In the past, kids aged three and up could participate with their parents. Eli was totally excited to 'c-ween' and paint with Daddy. It wasn't possible this time due to the amount of heavy labor needed. On the bright side, he was moved up to the older room at church, so he's hanging out with some of his older friends now. Maddux was a bit teary going into her class, but I was told that she got happy quick and even started to help comfort another child who was upset.

We picked the kids up from their rooms at noon so we could all eat lunch together. The long (and early) morning finally caught up with Eli and he had a meltdown about eating lunch. He shifted his mood once he saw the stack of cupcakes, however. (Especially when he saw his buddies, Tyler and Noah enjoying their tasty treats!) When he realized he could score one of them by zipping his lip and finishing his lunch, he rose to the challenge. You'd think this kid never gets cupcakes or something! Oh wait...he doesn't ;)
